CareSource Supports Community Basketball Tournament
CareSource, a nationally recognized nonprofit health plan, announced today they are the League Leading Sponsor of The City League, a community basketball tournament in Indianapolis. The three-year agreement will ensure the sustainability of the community event each summer while increasing access to wellness and other services.
“CareSource knows the importance community gatherings have on health,” said Steve Smitherman, president of CareSource Indiana. “Personally, I’ve coached my children’s baseball teams for the past 18 years and see first-hand the impact participation in sports can have on behavioral health and overall wellbeing.”
The City League is the product of collaboration between local businesses and organizations to produce a unique basketball event. The energy created by the basketball tournament provides a platform to bring the community together, encourage participation in sports, and improve access to needed services that improve attendees’ quality of life. Services include free sports physicals, vaccinations, a job fair and education surrounding women’s health.
“We are extremely excited to be working with CareSource to bring together great basketball and important resources to help improve the health of residents on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis,” said Austin Taylor, executive director of The City League. “Culturally there isn’t any single institution in Indiana that transcends the different groups we belong to – race, class, gender, religion, profession – like basketball. It is a simple game that we Hoosiers have embraced like no other people in the world. For this reason, the game is a great tool in bringing diverse groups of people together for collaboration.”
This year, the tournament will take place on Wednesday and Thursday nights from June 29 to Aug. 11. Registration and additional information are available at thecityleague.org.
