The Montgomery County Master Gardeners

The Montgomery County Master Gardeners met on Dec. 5 at the county fairgrounds for their regular monthly meeting.  Both the secretary’s and the treasurer’s reports were given and approved.

Extension educator Tricia Herr had flyers available for members to take advertising the upcoming Master Gardener Basic Training Class that begins in February. Anyone interested in taking the class can call the extension office at 765-364-6363.  Tricia also reminded members to have all of their volunteer and education hours entered in the system by the end of the year. The Bi-State Gardening Conference will be held at the Beef House on Jan. 24.  The cost is $30.  Members voted to reimburse any Master Gardener attendees for half of the cost.

Sheri Bethard reported that the plant sale committee is looking for some greenhouse space where we can grow some plants for the plant sale on April 29.  She has also been in contact with the DNR regarding regulations for growing our own plants to sell at the annual sale.

Reports on the monarch waystation and seed library projects were sent to the members via email.  Progress is being made on both projects.

Members Nancy Bowes and Anne Viray Sipahimalani reported on the excellent workshop they attended in Lafayette with Ag and Natural Resources Educator, Dr. Pat Williams.  They encouraged other members to attend a repeat of the workshop coming up later in the week.

The dates for regular meetings were discussed.  It was decided to continue meeting on the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m.  On the months this conflicts with a holiday, the meeting will be moved to the second Monday.

Following the adjournment of the meeting, holiday snacks and wassail were enjoyed by the members as they viewed the PBS production of “My Garden of a Thousand Bees”.  The excellent video follows acclaimed wildlife filmmaker Martin Dohrn, who, locked down by coronavirus, turned his lenses on the surprising and spectacular bees living in his own urban garden in Bristol, England.
