John R. Oilar, a local artist, received a letter on April 17 informing him that he would be featured in the latest edition of the prestigious Marquis Who’s Who. This particular publication is a thick volume that showcases artists who have made significant contributions to their individual mediums.

Oilar’s specialty is “ink on paper” and offers a signature style rooted in realism. Oilar was born in Lafayette and first studied art at Sister M. Rufina, OSF in Lafayette. After graduating from Klondike High School, outside of West Lafayette, Oilar studied art and history abroad in Europe, but mostly in Italy. Oilar then graduated with honors from Western New Mexico University with a major in art. Oilar is also a scholarship graduate of 1971 from Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis.

Oilar’s works can be seen all over Crawfordsville, as he has donated more than two dozen works to various businesses, offices and non-profits. Some locations that include Oilar’s works are Franciscan Health and Fusion 54. Oilar has also created logos and other designs for businesses across the globe.

In 2006, Oilar was chosen for the worldwide edition of Manchester Who’s Who, a similar publication to Marquis. Oilar was also one of 20 artists chosen nationally for the IUPUI National Sports Art Museum invitational. Oilar has received more than 70 awards in ink drawings.

Oilar attributes his success to the support of his wife Diane.
