Verla Lee (Taylor) Snelling, age 83, of Crawfordsville, passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at Ben Hur Health and Rehabilitation. She was born in Carmi, Illinois on January 4, 1940, to the late Lucian Taylor and Elizabeth (Hutchison) Belford.
Verla attended Carmi High School and became a paralegal. She married John Yates, and together they had four children. She later married Donald Snelling and he preceded her in death on February 14, 2006. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Moose Lodge, VFW, Eagles, and the American Legion. Verla was the National Female Trap Shooter. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed word searches, crocheting, and quilting. The joy of her life was her family.
Verla is survived by three daughters, Tammy Anders, Tina Payne, Tracy (Jim) Haslam; daughter-in-law, Debbie Yates; three siblings, Frank (Rene) Taylor, Rick (Teresa) Belford, and Glenda (Allen) Brooks; grandchildren, Shaylee (Scott) Gilstrap, Michelle (Lanie) Thompson, Clif Ziegler, Amber (Jason) West, Meagan Hamm, Alyson Payne, Nicholas Mitchem, Taylor Mitchem, Jessica Yates, and Johnnie Yates; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Kamren, Mason, McKenzie, Ava, Chase, Hunter, Haze, Zayne, Layla, Brooklynn, Izabelle, Scarlette, Elena, Lilly, and Zion; step-grandchildren, Jelissa Gregus, Jenna Haslam, Mandy (Zach) Williams; and step-great-grandchildren, Alidy, Hugh, Hank, Alessio, and Wyatt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; son, Jay Yates; sisters, Faye Chin-Bing, Sue Fraizer; sons-in-law, Craig Mitchem and Steve Payne; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Yates; and great-granddaughter, Madisyn Gilstrap.
There will be a visitation at Sanders Priebe Funeral Care, 315 S. Washington Street in Crawfordsville, on Sunday, September 3, 2023 from 1:00 pm until the time of funeral service at 2:30 pm with Chaplain Lucretia Jenkins officiating.
