Wabash College hosts Community Quilt Day
The Wabash College art department and the Sugar Creek Quilters are hosting Community Quilt Day on Saturday, April 12, to celebrate Montgomery County’s quilting heritage and future.
The event will take place at the Wabash College Fine Arts Center located at 504 S. Grant Avenue, from noon – 3 p.m. Free parking is available in the lot next to the Fine Arts Center.
Several activities are scheduled for participants to enjoy, including a quilt block workshop led by members of the Sugar Creek Quilters. Visitors can create quilt blocks for a community quilt to be auctioned for the Montgomery County Free Clinic. No quilting experience is necessary. Children can enjoy a take-home quilting activity led by Wabash students.
A free BBQ lunch will be served at noon and accompanied by a dance performance by the Second Baptist Dance Ministry.
Textile art created by Wabash Students will be on view along with works created by local school groups. The event also features a reception for “A Quilted Legacy,” an exhibit by the Sugar Creek Quilters, curated by Wabash Artist-in-Residence Julian Jamaal Jones. Additionally, April 12 marks the final day of Jones’ “Amen” exhibit, featuring his contemporary quilts and works on paper.
Community Quilt Day is sponsored by the Wabash College art department, Sugar Creek Quilters, the Malcolm X Institute of Black Studies, and the Restoring Hope, Restoring Trust Grant. This event is free and open to the public.
