Railroad Crossing Meeting April 14
The City of Crawfordsville invites residents to a public open house to learn about the Crawfordsville Crossing: Railway Crossing Elimination Project. The event will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 at the Crawfordsville Career Academy, 2255 Phil Ward Blvd.
In late 2024, the City was awarded $1.12 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration under the Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program to support project planning and development phases for a grade separation project at the Market Street/SR 32/SR 47/US 136 and CSX Transportation railroad crossing in Crawfordsville.
The existing at-grade railroad crossing has long presented congestion, safety and emergency response challenges in one of Crawfordsville’s most heavily traveled corridors. Following the City’s extensive, data-driven review of the crossing’s impact on residents, businesses and public safety, the grant was awarded through a competitive national process focused on improving safety and mobility at railroad crossings across the country.
The City is working with HWC Engineering to develop a design that reimagines this troublesome intersection by improving safety, mobility, emergency response, and economic opportunities for Crawfordsville residents by eliminating the existing at-grade railroad crossing. The project will also enhance the appearance of the corridor through updated lighting, landscaping, and hardscaping design.
“This project has been a long time in the making,” said Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton. “The planning and design phase is essential both to procure construction funding, but also to ensure that we come up with a viable long-term solution to a challenge that has affected Crawfordsville’s residents, visitors, and emergency services for decades. Public input is critical, and we encourage the community to participate.”
The April 14 open house will be the first of several opportunities for the public to review progress and provide input. The HWC project team will introduce the project and share preliminary observations and early design concepts, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and share feedback.
