Commons Pushing Constitutional Term Limits

A resolution co-sponsored by State Rep. Matt Commons (R-Williamsport) seeking to amend congressional term limits into the U.S. Constitution is heading to the governor.

According to a 2025 survey by U.S. Term Limits, 84 percent of Hoosier voters support congressional term limits and 82 percent want state lawmakers to support legislation leading to that.

“Term limits for federal lawmakers has been a long-running conversation,” Commons said. “U.S. representatives and senators are the people’s voice in Congress, and we want to ensure these elected officials are working in the best interest of Hoosiers and not just for themselves.”

Through Senate Joint Resolution 21, Indiana would call for an Article V convention for the purpose of proposing an amendment to impose term limits on U.S. Congress members. According to Article V of the Constitution, two-thirds of the states must call a convention to set a limit on the number of terms a member of Congress can serve by amending the Constitution.

Indiana is one of 11 states to pass term limit legislation in 2025. After 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic, and the term limits amendment is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.

Senate Joint Resolution 21 now moves to the governor for further consideration. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.

Commons represents House District 13, which includes all of Benton and Warren counties, and portions of Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Tippecanoe and White counties.
